FriendLoan’s AI portfolio manager

Every loan, watched.
Every debit, timed.
Defaults, headed off.

Saras watches every loan in the MSME book from the day it is disbursed, not only the ones that are late. It times each borrower’s auto-debit, spots the early signs before a first miss, and steers the provision the book adds each day. From the first missed EDI, its collections desk calls, in Tamil, with three voices.

How Saras works

Portfolio management first, collections second. Most of the work happens while a loan is still current; the calls start only once an EDI is missed.

  1. Watches the whole book

Every loan from disbursal, refreshed from the LMS every ten minutes, read-only: repayments, mandates, bureau and history.

  2. Times every auto-debit

For each borrower it picks the best of four debit slots inside the NPCI windows, and keeps an explore and a control arm to prove it.

  3. Sees trouble early

Behaviour clusters and early-warning signals flag the borrowers likely to slip, before the first missed EDI.

  4. Steers the provision

Its one steering number is the provision the book adds each day, computed on every loan from the policy ladder and reconciled with the LMS.

  5. Calls from DPD 1

Once an EDI is missed, the collections desk calls within 08:00–19:00, agrees a date the borrower can keep, and turns firmer only when it has to.

  6. Learns after every call

Each conversation teaches it the real reason, the person’s manner and the next best approach, folded into tomorrow’s advice.

From DPD 1: three voices, one ladder

Early slips get warmth and respect. The voice grows firmer as days pass or promises break, and never crosses into threats.

Durga துர்கா

Collections officer · 1–10 days past due

Warm and unhurried. Opens with who she is, asks what is possible, and treats a first slip as a first slip.

Muthukumaran முத்துக்குமரன்

Senior collections manager · 11–30 days

Firmer and precise. Names the next threshold and its consequence, and settles a date before the call ends.

Duraisingam துரைசிங்கம்

Regional manager · 31+ days

The senior voice for long-overdue and hard cases, and the last call before the field team is asked to visit.

Every call makes the next one better

A cheap model reads each conversation first and hands it to a stronger one only when unsure. Lessons need evidence before they reach a caller, and a share of borrowers is never called, so the lift is measured rather than assumed.

  • A profile per borrower: how firm, how honest, how reliable their promises are
  • An hourly lesson book and a nightly brief for every caller
  • A/B tests on tone and deadlines, judged on promises actually kept
The learning loop: call, learner, lesson book, next call Call Learner Lesson book Next call

Guardrails that do not move

Calls only from 08:00 to 19:00. No exceptions, and never more than three a day.

Identity first. Every call says who is calling and why. If asked, it says it is an AI assistant.

No threats, no third parties. Firm is allowed; frightening is not. Nothing is discussed with anyone but the borrower.

People own the big decisions. Waivers, settlements, restructures and field visits always go to a person.

Hardship is heard. Illness, a death in the family or a disaster stops the ladder and goes to a person.

One switch stops it all. Any admin can pause every call from any page, and every change is logged.
